I hear your silence
I Hear Your Silence è una fanzine che racconta la resistenza di attivistə queer in Libano, Giordania e Tunisia, attraverso le immagini della fotografa Daniela Sala (Fada Collective) e le parole dell’attivista e scrittore Hasan Kilani.
Nel 2017, un gruppo di attvistə ha dipinto un enorme murales su un palazzo del centro di Beirut, che raffigura due uomini che si abbracciano. “Posso sentire il tuo silenzio”, dice uno all’altro. Il messaggio, rivolto alle persone queer, è chiaro: siamo qui, non siete soli. Oggi quel murales è ancora in piedi nonostante le bombe israeliane, mentre le battaglie per i diritti civili vacillano di fronte all’uso politico dell’identità e a una sempre maggiore polarizzazione in Medio Oriente. Quando confini fisici e simbolici costruiscono muri che non lasciano intravedere l’altro, rimettere al centro storie fluide, queer, è un atto resistente.
Daniela Sala ha incontrato, intervistato e fotografato decine di attivistə queer, realizzandone un ritratto intimo e collettivo che percorre geografie al margine dell’eteronormatività. I Hear Your Silence nasce per ribaltare questa narrazione univoca, dando spazio alle voci di chi non si arrende. Un invito al dialogo, a mettere da parte pregiudizi e stereotipi, per lasciarsi ispirare dalla forza e dalla creatività di queste comunità.
La fanzine, disegnata e stampata in Risograph® da Tiratura, è stata realizzata grazie ad un crowdfunding e al sostegno di Cospe, nell’ambito del progetto Dream.
I Hear Your Silence is a fanzine that narrates the resistance of queer activists in Lebanon, Jordan and Tunisia, through the images of photographer Daniela Sala (Fada Collective) and the words of activist and writer Hasan Kilani.
In 2017, a group of activists painted a huge mural on a building in central Beirut, depicting two men hugging. ‘I can hear your silence,’ one says to the other. The message, addressed to queer people, is clear: we are here, you are not alone. Today, that mural still stands despite Israeli bombs, while the battles for civil rights falter in the face of the political use of identity and increasing polarisation in the Middle East. When physical and symbolic boundaries build walls that prevent us from seeing the other, putting fluid, queer stories back at the centre is an act of resistance.
Daniela Sala met, interviewed and photographed dozens of queer activists, creating an intimate and collective portrait that traverses geographies on the margins of heteronormativity. I Hear Your Silence was created to overturn this univocal narrative, giving space to the voices of those who do not give up. It is an invitation to dialogue, to put aside prejudices and stereotypes, to be inspired by the strength and creativity of these communities.
The fanzine, designed and printed in Risograph® by Tiratura, was produced thanks to crowdfunding and the support of Cospe, as part of the Dream project.
